Which areas?
Which areas are switching power supplies and linear power supplies suitable for
Switching power supplies do not require a transformer to convert AC line power directly to DC voltage, and then convert that raw DC voltage to a high-frequency AC signal that will be used in the regulator circuit to generate the required voltage and current.
The linear power supply design applies the AC line voltage to the power transformer to raise or lower the voltage before it is applied to the regulator circuit. As the size of the transformer is indirectly proportional to the operating frequency, this can result in a large and heavy power supply.
Each type of power supply operation has its advantages and disadvantages. A switching power supply is 80 percent smaller and lighter than the corresponding linear power supply, but it generates high-frequency noise that can interfere with electronic equipment. Unlike linear power supplies, switching power supplies can withstand AC losses in the 10-20 ms range without affecting the output.
Linear power supplies require larger semiconductor devices to regulate the output voltage and therefore generate more heat, which reduces energy efficiency. For 24V output, linear power supplies are typically about 60 percent efficient, compared to 80 percent or higher for switch-mode power supplies. Linear power supplies have a faster transient response time than their switch-mode counterparts, which is important in some specific areas. Typically, switch-mode power supplies are lightweight and compact, making them suitable for portable devices. Linear power supplies are suitable for powering analog circuits because of their low electrical noise and ease of control.
Common faults
Common faults in switching power supplies.
Which is a common fault in switching power supplies? A common fault in switching power supplies is the switching transistor itself. A shorted transistor causes a large amount of current to flow through the transformer and blows a fuse.
Transistor failures are usually caused by bad capacitors. Find the swollen or leaking output filter capacitor and replace any capacitors that look bad. To stop this common failure from happening again, the output filter capacitor should be replaced with a capacitor. Most power supply manufacturers do not install low ESR capacitors as original equipment because they are somewhat more expensive than conventional capacitors. However, it is worthwhile using them as replacement components as they will greatly improve the life of the power supply.
Diode failure is another common problem. There are many diodes in a switching power supply and a single diode failure can cause the power supply to blow a fuse or shut down. A common diode failure is a short circuit in the +12 volt or -5 volt output rectifier. Some of these failures may be caused by the use of the +12 or -5 volt outputs. The high voltage input diode may also be shorted.
About Product
The LMR16020 is a 60 V, 2 A SIMPLE SWITCHER® step down regulator with an integrated high-side MOSFET. With a wide input range from 4.3 V to 60 V, it’s suitable for various applications from industrial to automotive for power conditioning from unregulated sources. The regulator’s quiescent current is 40 µA in Sleep-mode, which is suitable for battery powered systems. An ultra-low 1 µA current in shutdown mode can further prolong battery life. A wide adjustable switching frequency range allows either efficiency or external component size to be optimized. Internal loop compensation means that the user is free from the tedious task of loop compensation design. This also minimizes the external components of the device. A precision enable input allows simplification of regulator control and system power sequencing. The device also has built-in protection features such as cycle-by-cycle current limit, thermal sensing and shutdown due to excessive power dissipation, and output overvoltage protection.
The LMR16020 is available in an 8-pin HSOIC package with exposed pad for low thermal resistance.
