The is CPLD is a short for Complex Programmable Logic Device. It is a logic component that is more complex than a PLD. CPLD is a kind of digital integrated circuit which users construct logic function according to their own needs. The basic design method is to use the integrated development software platform, using the schematic, hardware description language and other methods, generate the corresponding object file, through the download cable (” in the system “programming) to send the code to the target chip, to achieve the design of the digital system.
In the 1970s, PLD, the earliest programmable logic device, was born. Its output structure is programmable logic macro unit, because its hardware structure design can be completed by software (equivalent to the house after the construction of manual design of partial interior structure), so its design has a strong flexibility than pure hardware digital circuit, but its too simple structure also makes them can only achieve a small scale circuit. In order to make up for the defect that PLD can only design small circuit, in the mid-1980s, the complex programmable logic device –CPLD was introduced. At present, the application has been deep in the network, instrumentation, automotive electronics, CNC machine tools, aerospace TT&C equipment and other aspects.
It has the characteristics of flexible programming, high integration, short design and development cycle, wide application range, advanced development tools, low design and manufacturing cost, low requirements for designers’ hardware experience, no testing of standard products, strong confidentiality, popular price, and so on. It can realize large-scale circuit design. Therefore, it is widely used in the prototyping and production of products (generally less than 10,000 pieces). CPLD devices can be used in almost all applications of small and medium-sized universal digital integrated circuits. CPLD devices have become an indispensable part of electronic products, and its design and application have become an essential skill for electronic engineers.
