An internal voltage regulator allows for single-rail operation. Enhancements have been made to the HRPWM to allow for dual-edge control (frequency modulation). Analog comparators with internal 10-bit references have been added and can be routed directly to control the PWM outputs. The ADC converts from 0 to 3.3-V fixed full-scale range and supports ratio-metric VREFHI/VREFLO references. The ADC interface has been optimized for low overhead and latency.

Today, high-end 32-bit microcontrollers are now running at main frequencies over 300MHz, with performance catching up with the dedicated processors of the mid-1990s. Contemporary microcontroller systems are no longer developed and used only in a bare-metal environment, and a large number of dedicated embedded operating systems are widely used on the full range of microcontrollers. High-end microcontrollers used as the core processors for handheld computers and mobile phones can even use dedicated Windows and Linux operating systems directly.
